Associate Degrees in Software Engineering

After obtaining an associate degree in software engineering, you will have a solid foundation in troubleshooting network problems, software construction and engineering, software programming, basic software development and math in basic engineering.

The courses you take will teach you, web scripting, HTML, fundamental programming, ethics and professionalism, societal issues and emerging technologies. You will also learn about change related stresses, systems thinking, logic and historical developments.

The associate degree studies concentrate in the areas of organizational behavior, software applications, and principles of MIS, networking, database reporting, project management and systems analysis.

The courses required for an associate degree in software engineering are Introduction to Information Systems Technology, Website Design, Java Programming, Mathematics and Logic, Discrete Structures and Advanced Website Design. You will also take Computer Organization, Perl Programming, Technical Math, Principles of Management, Computer Networks, Introduction to Logic, and System Administrator.

You will also complete CSE Projects, Technology Communication, Statistics and Calculus for Engineering. There are also electives that are required. These may include Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology and Written Communication. Although the course titles may be different from college to college, they will all teach the same things.

Perl Programming teaches you the scripting language that is used on the Internet, servers and PC's for a large variety of programming problems. Perl is easier to learn than Java, C++ and C. The skills you learn through Perl programming are especially important for system administrators and web developers.

Computer Networks teaches you about protocols, logical topologies and network media. You learn about IP addressing schemes and LAN/WAN connectivity. In Java Programming, you will learn about the fundamentals of programming using Java. This includes interface applications, debugging, coding, algorithm development and program construction.

Statistics will discuss the overview of statistics including regression, hypothesis, estimation, distributions, probability and elementary probability. Principles of Mangement teaches you about accomplishing and establishing business objectives. It will also teach directing, staffing, organizing and planning.

Introduction to Logic introduces you to evaluating arguments and how to use formal techniques. After you complete this course, you will have an understanding of logical definitions, and know the difference between a valid argument and a sound argument. You will also know how to use counter models and truth tables, which are semantic methods.

Careers in Software Engineering

After earning your associate degree in software engineering, you will be prepared for a career in database management support, assistant software engineer, computer support specialist and assistant network systems analyst. You may work as a software publisher, developer and website designer, software engineer, forensic computer analysis, computer system designer or management analysts.
