The courses needed to obtain the associate degree in homeland security are Introduction to Microsoft Office, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Professional Communication, Report Writing, Introduction to Psychology and Written Communication. Other courses are Traffic Theory, Community Policing Strategies, Criminal Law, Juvenile Law, Introduction to Sociology and Oral Communications.
Additional courses are Constitutional Law, Criminal Investigation Theory, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, and Introduction to College Math, Speech, Abnormal Psychology and Health Lifestyles for Law Enforcement. You will also take Unified Tactical Skills EVOC/Vehicle Contact, Emergency Responder for Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement Practical Applications, Unified Tactical Firearm Skills and Unified Tactical DAAT-UOF Skills.
There are five courses that a student must take if specializing in homeland security besides the courses for the criminal justice degree. They are Introduction to Homeland Security, Introduction to Intelligence, Introduction to Emergency Management and Organizational and Facility Security.
Introduction to Homeland Security teaches you about emergency management and terrorism. This course provides you with information that is up to date on terrorism, dilemmas, security policies and terrorist behavior. You also learn how to deal with threats and what attacks can do to the country.
Introduction to Intelligence teaches you about preventing terrorism, how to investigate criminal enterprises and policing applications and how to perform them effectively. Introduction to Emergency Management teaches mitigation, recovery, response and preparedness.
Although every college has different titles for classes, the courses teach the same thing. Some colleges will also eliminate some of the criminal justice courses needed, but again, every college is different as to what courses are needed.
Careers in Homeland Security
After earning your degree in homeland security, you can work as a border patrol agent, FEMA agent, customs officer or as an immigration official. You can also pursue a career with the NSA or the CIA as well as other intelligence agencies.
The associate degree in homeland security will allow you to apply for positions with the office of the Secretary, Directorate for National Protection and Programs, Directorate fro management or the office of intelligence and analysis.
