After completing this associate degree, you will have learned what the role is that a law enforcement professional is faced with every day and how to handle any tasks associated with security and enforcement. You will learn how to detect and prevent crime and how to interrogate and interview suspects, witnesses and victims. You also learn how to write accurate and detailed reports, and how to handle accident scenes and crime scenes. You will learn how to talk with the public effectively.
The courses needed to obtain the associate degree in criminal justice are Introduction to Microsoft Office, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Professional Communication, Report Writing, Introduction to Psychology and Written Communication. Other courses are Traffic Theory, Community Policing Strategies, Criminal Law, Juvenile Law, Introduction to Sociology and Oral Communications.
Additional courses are Constitutional Law, Criminal Investigation Theory, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, and Introduction to College Math, Speech, Abnormal Psychology and Health Lifestyles for Law Enforcement. You will also take Unified Tactical Skills EVOC/Vehicle Contact, Emergency Responder for Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement Practical Applications, Unified Tactical Firearm Skills and Unified Tactical DAAT-UOF Skills.
Most courses at colleges for Microsoft Office are done as a self-paced course. This allows you time to take the course before or during the first term. Introduction to Criminal Justice will teach you about professionalism in law enforcement, modern policing, preventing crimes verses constitutional rights and debating the code of ethics. This course gives you the general information needed to move along to the other criminal justice course.
After you have completed all the courses, you will be ready to find a career in the criminal justice system. This can be a rewarding experience.
Careers in Criminal Justice
After earning your associate degree, you can have a career in many different fields including police liaison officers, bailiff, ballistics expert, booking officer, border patrol and community service officer. You can also work as a crime lab technician, customs agent, dispatcher, juvenile advocate, narcotics officer or secret service. The criminal justice degree will also allow you to work as a corrections officer in a county or state agency.
You will be able to work in the public or private sector. You could work in loss prevention, private security or private investigations. There is always a need for law enforcement officers as well as correctional officers.
