An associate degree in accounting can prepare you for a rewarding career in company finances, changing financial laws and business. The opportunities to become a chief financial officer, controller or accounting manager exist after completing the associate degree.

Accounting is the process to analyze, report, summarize and record financial data. An accountant makes reports that will detail the business's assets and expenses while keeping reports for tax reporting. The accountant will work with all transactions, sales receipts and invoices from a business standpoint. In some cases, the accountant works from reports give by a bookkeeper detailing such transactions.

An accounting associate is responsible for cost control and managing reports as well analyzing all reports that show what expenses and assets the company has available. The accountant charts reports showing debits, credits, equity and income for the business or individual. Tax accountants document monthly reports and prepare end of the year tax returns.

Using computer technology will allow the accountant to make spreadsheets, pie charts and other accounting charts. An accountant will be able to communicate information effectively to a diverse population.

The student must demonstrate complete competence in business law, information systems, tax accounting, cost accounting and financial accounting using the correct criteria for measurement that is accepted by professional standards.

Typical Entry Requirments  

Earning an associate degree in accounting will require the student to take Accounting I, II, III, IV and Accounting Cost I and II. The student will also be required to take Accounting Income Tax II and Accounting Information Systems. The course will also require a course in Written Communications, Math with Business Applications, Introduction to Sociology, Business Law I and Economics.

The associate degree includes Portfolio Introduction, Spreadsheet Data Management, Oral Communications, and Introduction to Ethics and one elective. The student must also have a career assessment course, Portfolio assessment and Introduction to Psychology.

These classes will prepare the student for any areas of accounting related to business, financial planning and tax preparation.

Admission steps may require you to take an entrance assessment and have a Microsoft skills check in Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Career Opportunities in Accounting

Career opportunities in accounting can range from becoming an account systems analyst, tax accountant, staff accountant, payroll accountant, auditor and an accounts payable and receivable clerk.
